Absolute Combat 3: Evolution Review 06 May 2010 By Del Hillan

The Absolute Combat team were back in Edinburgh this past weekend for the 3rd instalment of their very successful MMA event titled “Evolution”.

First fight up was a semi pro fight between Shaun Edmondson (Urban Disturbance) and Darren Gunnell (Dual Samurai).  Gunnell starts with an early takedown but Edmondson manages to stay focused and attempts a Kimura but Gunnell slips out of it only to find himself in a very tight triangle which he is forced to tapout to.

Next up was Elliot Diaz vs Andrew Glenn in the second semi-pro fight of the evening. Glenn gets an early takedown but Diaz manages to get back to his feet only to have Glenn take him back down again and moves into side control. Diaz turns him and gets into the mount position. Both fighters move for position on the ground. Diaz wants this fight standing so gets up and invites his opponent to stand and trade with him. The ref stands him up and Glenn quickly takes Dian back to the mat to end the first round.

Round 2 and both fighters start trading blows but its Glenn who again takes Diaz down. In the stand-up Diaz has drew first blood as Glenn’s nose starts to bleed. Diaz manages to get back to his feet and takes Glenn down, his corner shout at him to stand back up which he does but gets taken straight back down again. Both take turns being in the top position to end the round.

Into round 3 and its Glenn again with the takedown and moves into side mount. Glenn works his way to Diaz’s back and sinks in a rear naked choke to leaving Diaz with no option but to tap.

David Hamilton (EKMMA) vs Sean Taylor (Lycans) was next. Round 1 started with both fighters scrambling for position but its Taylor who gets Hamilton to the mat first. Both get back to their feet and Taylor manages to grab Hamilton’s head and try for a guillotine but Hamilton slips out and with Taylor now on the floor he gets on top and both fight for an opening to end the round.

Hamilton begins round 2 with 2 or 3 headkicks before one connects with  Taylors head and drops him to the floor. Taylor quickly recovers and gets back to his feet but Hamilton takes him back down again. Stood back up Hamilton connects with 2 more headkicks before taking him back town yet again.

Round 3 begins with both fighters trading heavy blows and Hamilton has Taylor on the back floor until Taylor goes for a takedown and gets Hamilton to the floor and works for a submission but is unable to get one. Hamilton turns him over as the buzzer sounds for the end of the fight.

WINNER - David Hamilton Split Decision

In the final semi – pro bout of the evening John Black (Jigoku) takes on Kieran Malone (DNFT). The fight begins with Malone taking Black to the ground where he controls the action. Malone tries for an armbar but can’t secure it, this allows Black some room to turn and get back to his feet. Malone is having none of this and takes Black back down again to end the round.

Much of the same in round 2 as Malone takes Black down and this time lands some knees and punches to the body of his opponent. Malone controls the rest of this round on top.

Round 3 and Malone tries for a takedown but Black is getting use to this and manages to fight him off but Malone perseveres and eventually gets Black to the floor. He again controls the action and is quick to snuff out anything Black attempts.

WINNER - Kieran Malone Unanimous Decision

The first Pro fight of the night is between Mark Platts (Gracie Barra Newcastle) and Rob McCrum (Lycans). It’s Platts who begins the fight well as he takes McCrumb down. McCrumb eventually gets back to his feet. Platts however manages to take him back down to end the round.

Round 3 begins with McCrumb taking Platts down. With both fighters back to their feet McCrumb jumps on Platts and attempts a guillotine but Platts flips over and pulls himself free. Back to the floor and McCrumb grabs a leg and tries for a kneebar, while in this position Platts drops some nasty looking heel kicks to McCrumb’s side and the round ends.

McCrumb starts round 3 with a takedown, Platts battle and gets back to his feet. The fight goes back to the floor and the round ends with McCrumb on top.

WINNER - Rob McCrumb Unanimous Decision

Bobby McVitie (Team Viper) v Alan McCauley (DNFT) was up next in what proved to be the fight of the night. As both fighters battle for position McCauley throws McVitie hard to the mat. On the floor McVitie has a tight armbar but McCauley gets free and manages to get on top and land some hard punches. From the bottom McVite sinks in a triangle but just can’t force his opponent to tap as the bell sounds for the end of the round.

Round 2 begins and both fighters land hard rights and McVitie also lands a knee which drops McCauley but he is unable to finish him. McCauley manages to compose himself and ends up on top. McVite again tries for an armbar but McCauley escapes and begins to drop bombs as the round comes to an end with McCauley on top.

Into the final round and both fighters land hard punches. On the mat both trade punches and elbows. Back to the feet and McCauley lands a nasty looking headkick and follows that up with a hard right. The fight ends with both trading blows again and landing hard punches and McCauley wobbles as the busser sounds.

WINNER - Alan McCauley Unanimous Decision

Next up is Steven Kilfin (PCCB) vs Doni Miller (Battlefield Gym). This one doesn’t take long as Miller gets an early takedown and quickly takes Kilfin’s back and sinks in a rear naked choke and forces his opponent to tapout.

Chris Batty (Team Jigoku) vs Robert Whiteford (Hostile Territory) is next. Whiteford gets an early takedown but Batty gets straight back up again. Whitefored then picks him up and slams him to the mat where he begins to ground and pound his opponent into submission.

Chris Carmichael (Team Viper) vs Dan Hope (DNFT) is in the ring next. The fight goes to the ground early on where Carmichael gets hold of an arm and tries for a kimura but Hope manages to flip over and escape the submission hold. Carmichael tries for an armbar this time but is unable to make Hope tapout. The round comes to a close with Hope on top.

Round 2 and the fight goes to the mat once again where Hope is in control and drops some hard elbows and punches to his opponent which forces the ref to step in and call a halt t the fight.

WINNER – Dan Hope rd2 Referee stoppage due to GNP

Ryan Kelly (PCCB) vs James Mair (Rick Youngs Academy) was a quick one. Mair takes the fight to the ground early on but Kelly manages to get back to his feet. Kelly lands 2 hard knees and some hard punches which drops Mair which leaves the ref no option but to call a halt to the fight.

WINNER – Ryan Kelly 2:47 rd1 TKO

The main event of the night was Olivier Pastor (Team Pythagore) vs Graham Turner (DNFT).  Round 1 begins with both fighters trading kicks and punches. Pastor keeps dropping his hands egging Turner to come at him but Turner knows not to fall into this trap. Both continue to trade blows as the round comes to an end.

Round 2 is much of the same as they both exchange punches. Turner forces Pastor into the corner and lands knees trying to wear down his opponent. Out of the corner and again both trade heavy blows. A cut appears above Turners left eye and blood is flowing from it, the ref stops the fight and calls in the Doctor to give his opinion. The Doctor give the OK and the fight continues with both landing punches to end the round.

Third and final round. Turner’s corner has managed to control his cut and he comes out and lands some hard right hands which has Pastor acknowledging the. Turner takes him back into the corner and lands some knees. Pastor attempts a takedown but Turner manages to snuff this out. Pastor’s nose is now also bleeding as Turner looks to be tiring but he is holding Pastor at bay and not allowing him any chances as the fight comes to a close.

WINNER – Graham Turner Unanimous Decision

Another great event from the guys at Absolute Combat. The venue was packed and the atmosphere was fantastic. This is one of the premier shows in Scotland and I look forward to the next one.
