Bushido Challenge 2: A New Dawn: Review
05 Apr 2010
By Del Hillan
On 3rd April Bushido Challenge was in Nottingham to showcase its second event A New Dawn. There was a lot of hype going into this event and some very tasty fights lined up with 2 titles on the line to top it all off.
First up was Darryl Westcott vs Ed Ansah. It was Ansah who started off well with a brutal left hook and a left kick to Westcott's face which sent his gum sheild flying. The fight went to the mat where Ansah dropped knees and punches to his opponents ribs and head.
Back on their feet Westcott picks up Ansah and drives him into the cage to end the round. Into round 2 and both fighters battle for position but its Westcott who gets control and takes Ansah down. With not much action taking place on the floor the referee stands them up as the round comes to an end.
Round 3 starts with Westcott attempting a submission with a Rear Naked Choke but he is unable to finish his opponent who then manages to slip out and attempt a Rear Naked Choke of his own and the final bell sounds.
Winner Ed Ansah Majority Decision
The second bout of the night was Carl Booth vs Leon Edwards. The fight begins with both fighters trading punches until Edwards connects with an awesome flying leg kick. The round ends with both fighters feeling each other out and neither wanting to commit themselves.
Round 2 starts off with Edwards getting Booth to the ground where he quickly gets an armbar and holds onto it until booth has no option but to tapout.
Winner Leon Edwards 1:30 rd 2 tapout due to armbar
Daniel Dwyer vs Richard Halls was up next in the 3rd fight. The fight went to the ground early with Halls taking Dwyer to the mat. Dwyer manages to get his opponent turned over but in doing so Halls slips him into a triangle choke and forces Dwyer to tap.
Winner Richard Halls 1:44 rd 1 tapout due to triangle
Fight four saw Luke Dalton vs Mark Aplin. Mark Aplin entered the cage with a huge smile on his face and as the fight went on the smile stayed firmly in place. Aplin started with an early takedown and while he had Dalton on the mat he unloaded with some vicious ground and pound until the ref stepped in and called a halt to the fight. Aplin stood up with the smile still stretched across his face showing that he had enjoyed every second of the 54 seconds it took him to end the bout.
Winner Mark Aplin :54 rd 1 referee stoppage due to gnp
Brent Crawley vs Shaj Haque was up next in bout 5. The fight starts with both fighters looking for an opening, that comes in the form of a huge right hook from Crawley which drops his opponent to the floor. He quickly jump on top and continues with some ground and pound and instead of continuing with this offence he goes for a submission but is unable to pull anything off as the round ends. Into Round 2 and Haque takes Crawleys back but is unable to capitalise. He does however control the remainder of the round. Round 3 is much the same as the previous round with Haque controlling and ending the fight with an attempt at a kimura right to the bell.
Winner Shaj Haque unanimous decision
In the first Pro fight of the evening Dinky Ninja John Cullen took on David Hill. An early takedown by Hill starts off the fight, Hill also attempts and armbar and had Cullen trapped, Cullen picks up Hill and slams him down hoping to free his arm which he does but Hill quickly grabs it back again and tries again for the armbar. Cullen again manages to slip free and get into side control on top. Hill squirms his way out and ends up taking Cullen's back. Cullen stands up with Hill still on his back and with only seconds left of the round he slams his opponent to the mat as the bell sounds.
Round 2 and Hill again takes Cullen down and gets into mount position but Cullen quickly gets free and back to his feet. Hill also gets back standing and again takes Cullen down. Both fighters then swap positions each taking trying to get a better advantage whilst on top. The opening finally comes for Hill as he takes Cullen's back and works his way into a Rear Naked Choke which puts Cullen to sleep.
Winner David Hill referee stoppage due to rear naked choke
Alex Enlund vs Dino Gambatesa was the second Pro fight. Both fighters switch position from top to bottom a few times but its Enlund who who takes Gambatesa's back and sinks in a tight Rear Naked Choke which forces his opponent to tapout.
Winner Alex Enlund 2:58 rd1 tapout due to rear naked choke
Sham Haque vs Karl Harrison was next up and this was a blink and you miss it fight. Harrison drops Haque and quickly jumps on his opponent to force the ref to call a halt to the fight due to some heavy ground and pound.
Winner Karl Harrison :28 rd 1 referees stoppage due to gnp
One of UKMMA's favourites Leeroy Barnes was up against Nasef Alganga next in a bout that was only put together 2 days before the event. The fight started with Algana taking Barnes to the floor but he is not able to keep him there and Barnes uses his strength to get back to his feet. Both fighters trade blows but its Barnes who capitalises and and picks Alganga up and slams him to the ground where he quickly grabs hold of his head and sinks in a tight guillotine and force Alganga to tap.
Winner Leeroy Barnes 2:53 rd 1 tapout due to guillotine choke
Steve McCombe vs Vaughen Lee was bout 10 of the night. The fight starts with both fighters trading blows until an unintentional low blow by Lee brings a stop to the fight for around a minute. As the fight restarts its Lee who takes control and gets McCombe to the ground where he works quickly to sink in a Rear Naked Choke and forces McCombe to tapout.
Winner Vaughen Lee 2:26 rd 1 tapout due to rear naked choke
The first title fight of the night saw James Doolan take on Artemij Sitenkov for the Bushido Challenge Bantamweight belt. The fight didn't go to plan for the MMA Hit Pit blogger Doolan. As both fighters lock up Sitenkov wraps his legs around Doolan and slides down onto his hips, then in what only can be described as spider man like he climbed up Doolans body and swung round taking his arm with him and then dropping to the floor forcing Doolan to tapout in 34 seconds.
Winner Artemij Sitenkov :34 rd 1 tapout due to armbar
In the main event of the evening Danny Mitchell took on Eugene Fadiora for the Welterweight title. Both fighters trade blows to start the fight and its Fadoiora who gets first blood and Mitchell's nose begins to flow red.
Fadiora looks the more stronger of the fighters as it moves into round 3. Mitchell attempts an armbar but Fadiora manages to pull out of it and get top possition and begins to drop bobs which forces referee Marc Goddard to step in and call a halt to the fight and announce Fadiora as the new champion.
Winner Eugene Fadiora 2:19 rd 3 referee stoppage due to gnp
A very exciting evening at Bushido Challenge and some very impressive wins from the likes of Leeroy Barnes Mark Aplin and Artemij Sitenkov. This show is quickly becoming a force in UK MMA and other promoters should take note as this event is only getting bigger and better.
