Cathel Pendred: I plan to impose my will on Shannon at Cage Contender V
14 Jul 2010
By Chris Shanks
MMA Hit Pit caught up with Liam Shannon's opponent Cathel Pendred to get his thoughts on how this fight will go at Cage Contender V in Dublin on 24th July.
What type of threat does Liam Shannon pose?
From videos I've seen of him fight he tends to come out strong and aggressively which is something I've trained for and something which I hope to capitalise on.
How have you been training for Shannon?
I have been training in all aspects of MMA. I expect this fight to be fought in all ranges of the game. I have done extensive work on BJJ with my head coach John Kavanagh. I have also worked a great deal on my boxing with Paschal Collins (brother of Steve) in his gym with some great pro boxers.
Some have said that you are the biggest Welterweight in the UK, is it difficult to cut weight?
The first time I cut to 77kg it was very, very hard. However, it's gotten easier every time since. This will be my fourth time fighting at this weight and this should be my easiest weight cut to date.
Liam said that your physical presence is the biggest threat that you pose and that you are going to try and bully him. Do you think this will be the case?
I wouldn't say I'm going to bully him. I plan to impose my will on him. I don't plan on my size being a threat, it's my submission game and my striking which are going to lead to this fight being finished.
Liam has not fought in over 2 years. In the interview that I conducted with him he said that he expects to be rusty but has trained twice as hard. Do you think that this is something that you can capitalise on?
It's not something that I am focusing on at all. That is a factor outside of my control, I only concentrate on aspects of the fight which I can control. I'm sure it may be an issue for him but I have trained for the best Liam possible and that's who I expect to see on the 24th of July.
Shannon has trained for the fight to go all three rounds, but admits that it won't. Do you agree? Yes, I agree.
You are fighting on a pretty stacked card, one fight is being dubbed the biggest Bantamweight fight in European history. Will the nerves get to you?
It's an honour to be part of this card as it is the best card this country has ever seen(bar the UFC). I've never been a person who suffers from nerves before a fight. At the end of the day, a fight is a fight! It doesn't really where or when your fighting, you still have to get in there and do the exact same thing.
You are fighting for a title on the 24th, what will it mean to you to be crowned the champion and where will you go from there.
It means a great deal. I feel Cage Contender is the biggest up and coming promotion in Europe and to be their Welterweight Champion will be a great honour.
