Controlled Aggression 3 Review
04 Apr 2011
By Craig Maxfield
The small town of Bacup is Rawtenstall was the unlikely place for tonight's MMA action. Controlled Aggression is one of the only Semi-Pro promotions in the country, and they put on a great night of fights in the Semi-Pro division. Young and up-and-coming fighters got their chance to showcase their skills in front of a packed crowd at the Bacup Hub, this is Controlled Aggression 3 – No Guts No Glory!
Three titles were on the card tonight as well as 9 other Semi-Pro fights and 3 amateur contests, so lets get down to the action.
Fight 1 – Josh Ashton vs. Benji Philpott
Round 1
With these fights being amateur there were no head shots allowed. Both fighters came out to the centre with Benji getting and immediate takedown. Josh did well to control the wrists of Benji and both fighters eventually returned to the feet, only for Benji to score another takedown. Josh was quick to reverse the position which then saw Benji on the bottom. He tried numerous times to get back to top position and was warned by the referee for holding the fence. The round ended with Benji in the top position. A lot of ground work but little damage caused by either fighter and no real submission attempts.
Round 2
Straight away in this round Benji gets another takedown and lands in side control. He moves to the mount position and starts his transition to an arm triangle. With Josh defending well Benji once again is holding the cage and is warned many times until the referee has seen enough and deducts a point from him. The fight is restarted on the feet and Benji takes the fight to the floor once more with a big slam. Benji showed more ground dominance by moving again to mount and securing a deep Americana and Josh had no option but to tap out.
Winner – Benji Philpott by Americana in round 2 at a time of 3:16
Fight 2 – Bukiie Dunn vs. Sam Bates
Round 1
Bukiie Dunn comes to the centre of the cage with a kick which is timed perfectly by Sam and he uses the opening for a take down. Dunn shows a good ground game by quickly reversing Bates and getting the mount position. Dunn transitions to an arm bar attempt but Bates manages to escape and scramble to the top position. Dunn soon reverses and gets back to top position and again to the mount. With the clapper sounding for the last ten seconds we see Bates regain the top position but the round ends before he can throw any shots.
Round 2
As in the first round, Dunn throws a leg kick which is timed again by Bates for the take down. Dunn on the bottom looks for a kimura and isolates Bates’ arm. Bates rolls to try to escape but his face shows the pain he is in. He fights hard but eventually taps out.
Winner – Bukiie Dunn by Kimura in round 2 at a time of 0:50
Fight 3 – James Murphy vs. Glen Swan
Round 1
Both fighters make their way to the centre of the cage for the start of the first round. Swan immediately lands a big left front kick which sends Murphy to the mat. Murphy is quickly back to his feet and Swan continues to throw kicks. One of his kicks is caught by Murphy who takes the fight to the ground. During the scramble Swan ends up in the top position and stays there for the rest of the round. As the round ends we see Swan getting to mount but unable to cause any damage.
Round 2
The stand up at the beginning of this round is more evenly matched. Both fighters seem more comfortable in the cage now and are starting to loosen up. Swan gets a Thai clinch against the cage and throws a knee to the head of Murphy. The fighters are separated so Murphy can have time to recover. As the fight is restarted, Swan once again gets a Thai clinch but this time Murphy is able to punch his way out of it. Murphy shoots in for a take down but Swan catches him with a guillotine attempt. Murphy drops to the mat and escapes the guillotine but the round ends with Swan in the top position.
Winner Glen Swan by Unanimous Decision

Fight 5 – Shaj Haque vs. Danny Hardman
Round 1

Round 2
This round was again all about the ground work and take downs of Shaj. Shaj had many take downs in this round but never really caused much damage or showed total control of Hardman. Hardman was able to take the top position for himself during the round and even attempted a guillotine at one point but Shaj was able to escape. The rounded and fight ended with Shaj again on top.
Winner Shaj Haque by Unanimous Decision
Fight 6 – Anthony Dilworth vs. Tony Fanning

With the fight restarting we saw Fanning go for a take down but Dilworth able to roll and end the round on top.
Round 2
A head kick early on by Fanning is answered with a great straight right hand by Dilworth which knocks Fanning down. He recovers quickly and shoots for a take down but gets caught in a guillotine attempt by Dilworth. Winner Anthony Dilworth by Guillotine in round 2 at a time of 0:55
Fight 7 – Dave Toole vs. Tom Kenyon
Round 1
The whole of this round was spent on the ground. Tom Kenyon got the take down in the opening seconds of the round and he showed good control on the ground not losing his position until towards the end of the round when Toole was able to reverse Kenyon and gain mount.
Round 2
Another take down by Kenyon was how we started this round. A kimura was used by Toole to manoeuvre himself into the top position. After reversals by both fighters the referee stood the fight back up due to a lack of action. Toole was able to get a take down towards the end of the round and even move to mount.
The judges declare a draw so we move into a third and final round.
Round 3
This round is spent again on the mat. Kenyon with another early take down but Toole once again is able to reverse him and take the top position and mount. A good ground battle between the two fighters saw this being the closest round of all three, each one having control of the other and reversing each other to regain a dominant position. The round ends with an arm bar attempt by Toole.
Winner Dave Toole by Split Decision
Fight 8 – Trent Woodcock vs. Sam Spencer
Round 1
This was a great first round to a great fight. Both fighters had good stand up and didn’t mind exchanging early on in this round. Spencer took some clean shots to the face so he took the fight to the mat and attempted an arm bar. He lost the position and both fighters scrambled to their feet. More crisp stand up from the two and the round ended with the fighters clinching against the cage.
Round 2
Spencer got a big slam early in this second round but Woodcock was quick to reverse the position and end up on top. Once again the fighters returned to their feet only for Spencer to win another take down. He moves back and as Woodcock gets up to his feet, Spencer lands a huge right uppercut. Winner Wayne Teirney by TKO in round 1 at a time of 0:35
Fight 11 – Martin Chester vs. Danny Wallace
Round 1
No strikes are thrown as the fighters immediately clinch and end up against the fence. Chester fights hard to get a take down and eventually has Wallace on his back on the mat. Wallace then throws his legs up looking for a triangle which he gets, he doesn’t have it in tight to begin with but as he adjusts his position he tightens the hold. Chester doesn’t tap but eventually he goes out cold and the referee stops the fight.
Winner Danny Wallace by triangle in round 1 at a time of 2:45
Fight 12 – Anthony Smith vs. Nij Wright
Round 1
As Nij Wright comes to the cage he has a great reception from the crowd. Both fighters come out of their corners and a kick from Smith is caught by Wright and answered with a right hand which sends Smith to the floor. Fight 13 – Shaj Haque vs. Mike Berry
Round 1
This is the final of the 62kg tournament to determine the champion of the division. The fighters are soon clinching against the cage with Berry bleeding and motioning to the referee that he got hit with a head butt. The rest of the round is spent on the ground with Shaj Haque controlling where the fight took place. He spent most of the round in the top position and the once or twice that Berry was able to get to his feet, Haque soon took him back down.
Round 2
Shaj Haque had found a dominant formula in the first round and he stuck with it here. He spent the round taking Berry down and controlling him. The fighters were stood up by the referee for lack of action and it seemed the be on the feet where Berry had the advantage but he couldn’t stop the take downs from Haque. A good performance from both men in their second fight of the night.
Winner Shaj Haque by Unanimous Decision and the Controlled Aggression Bantamweight Champion.
Fight 14 – Ste Nightingale vs. Aaron Doherty
Round 1
The fans here were showing great support for both fighters and this was clearly the fight people has been wanting to see. The fighters scramble for position and the fight does go to the ground where Nightingale tries a knee bar. Doherty rolls and escapes but eventually ends up on his back and mounted by Nightingale who is looking for an arm triangle. He switches his position to side control and starts to tighten his grip and Doherty taps out.

They fight for control on the ground with neither fight gaining a dominant position and they return to their feet. The round ends with Dilworth throwing a wide range of kicks.
Round 2
As they come out for the second round, Dilworth is bleeding from his nose and cheek. Again the fight hits the floor but with neither fighter causing damage the referee stands it up for a lack of action. A big flurry of punches by Dilworth backs Toole into the fence and he lands some good strikes as well as a knee. Toole clinches to give himself time to recover. Once recovered from the barrage of punches and knees, Toole goes for a take down but its too late as the round comes to an end.
