17 Aug 2010
By Dean Weir
Much decorated BJJ practitioner, turned MMA fighter, Thiago "Monstro" Borges recently took time out to speak with MMA Hit Pit about his background and his upcoming bout on the Spirit MMA promotion.
For those that do not know, please tell us a about Thiago Monstro Borges, your background and achievements ??
I am a brazilian jiu-jitsu blackbelt, I have been practising for the past 14 years, I won a few tournaments like the Brazilian nationals, International challenge BJJ 3 times, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo states, nationals of Luta Livre (no gi), CBJJE European champion, Scandinavia open BJJ (Sweden), Copa Catalunya (Barcelona), Cope Euskady (Bilbao), second place at ADCC trials and a few others I cant remember now !
You clearly have a great record in Jiu-Jitsu, Luta Livre and MMA competition. Which achievement(s) are you most proud of ??
In fact I'm proud of every single achievement I had so far, each one represents one more step towards perfection and the more I compete, the more I learn and the more information I have to pass forward to my students !
Who, or what, was your inspiration to start training in Jiu Jitsu and subsequently the move into Mixed Martial Arts ??
When I was younger I watched the first UFC with my brother and when I saw all of those giants been submitted by a skinny BJJ guy (Royce Gracie), I decided that I should learn it !! The move to MMA was a natural move, I like to always test myself and also I must to be a fighter and have a real experience to pass on to my students. How can you teach BJJ for MMA if you never tried an armbar while the guys was trying to knock you out with punches in the guard ?
You will be making your next MMA appearance on the Spirit MMA promotion on September 25th. Do you know who your opponent will be at this event??
I don't know yet, but I will be ready for anyone !
How is your preparation going and will you be aligning it for a specific game plan for your opponent, when he is named ??
The preparation is going well, I'm training hard, I will come up with a game plan as soon as I find out who the opponent will be !
You currently spend time traveling the World holding seminars and sharing your knowledge. Do you prefer the coaching elements of the sport, or, do you live for the competition aspect ??
Actually I like both. I love to teach and pass a bit of my experience to my students. I like to see the smile on their faces when they get their medal, it is a great feeling, but at the same time I love to compete, I can't imagine my life without competitions and I know that all my students like to see me fighting, as I always liked to see my masters fight !
What does the future hold for "Monstro" Borges, in both the near and long term ??
What the future hold for me is in God's hands....but I can guarantee that I will always be ready to test myself in the cage !
Would you like to thank anyone for their support or maybe any sponsors ??
I wanna thank to my sponsors, TATAMI FIGHTWEAR, SOLO SUPPLEMENTS and EUROBRAZILIAN COMPANY.
Thank you Monstro. It has been a pleasure to speak with you and we hope to see a lot more of you on the MMA circuit.
Following on from this interview, Chris Hayat, the promoter of Spirit MMA passed on these comments regarding Monstro and his possible upcoming opponent :
"I'm personally thrilled to have Thiago on our show, he's a very well respected athlete who has accomplished a great deal already and I know that he's going to be putting up a great fight. We've got Lloyd Giles lined up for his opponent, pending the outcome of his upcoming bout on another show. Thiago is a great guy and I'm just looking forward to seeing him in action on September 25th."
