Jack Marshman Interview
29 Jun 2010
By Ben Cartlidge
MMA Hit Pit caught up with undefeated prospect Jack Marshman to chat about his aspirations and achievements.
You’ve had a flawless start to your pro career, what do you attribute this success to?
Being a confident, hard working, a hungry fighter who liked a challenge.
How has your training schedule changed since you turned pro?
I’m currently in the army, I’m hoping to leave so I can train full time, my training hasn’t changed much and remains similar to before I turned Pro. However, I try to make it more intense and to push myself to improve my all round game.
How far do you think you have evolved as a fighter since you began your mma career?
I’ve definitely evolved as I’ve worked a lot on my ground game, I know there is a lot more to learn but being only 20 I have time to work on it, but I’ll keep pushing myself.
What do you see as the advantages of training out of your current gym?
There are a lot of Pro fighters at the gym to train and spar with. I have a brilliant grappling coach Richard Shore and an amazing stand up coach Alex Costa who both push me.
Describe your training schedule on the run up to a fight.
Running up to my fight I try to schedule my training around work and train twice a day, I put a lot of time and effort into my training as I’m a young hungry fighter and want to go far. I try to train all areas evenly as often as possible.
You recently earned an impressive victory was over respected veteran Paul Jenkins. How much did a victory like this mean to you at such an early stage in your pro mma career?
I have a lot of respect for him as he’s a tough guy and some serious heavy hands, and was honoured to fight him. I want to take big fights like that as it’s a challenge and I learn a lot of experience from it. The guy has nearly 40 wins under his belt so it was a real challenge for me.
I actually fought Kevin Reed after that fight and won by TKO. He’s another guy with a lot more fights than me; he’s had 20 pro fights.
Who would you most like to fight if you were given the opportunity?
I would like to fight Alex Reid as I feel this fight would definitely help and push my career forward.
How far do you think the sport has developed in this country in recent years?
I live in small town in Wales, and within the last few years there has been 3 MMA gyms opened in a 10 mile radius, so it’s definitely becoming a well known sport with a lot of top British fighters making it big in the UFC, which is brilliant.
What does the future hold for Jack Marshman?
In the future I want to be a well known respected fighter; a fighter that other fighters will find to be a very challenging opponent.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give a nod to at this time?
All the team at Tillery Combat MMA Academy (www.tillerycombatmma.co.uk) especially Richard Shore and Black Label Fighting (www.blacklabelfightclub.co.uk).
