Quick Interview with Aaron Flynn
06 Aug 2010
By Chris Shanks
MMA Hit Pit had the chance to catch up with Aaron Flynn who enters to cage again this weekend at Cage Wars 4. His opponent is Collosseum's own Sam Ferguson
Hi Aaron thanks for talking to MMA Hit Pit, so tell us about the dangers you have seen in Ferguson's game.
I have not seen Sam fight before, but from what I hear he has good striking skills. We will have to wait and see when we get in there. Standing up is my base, I don't mind. I like to stand and bang. I am not too bad on the ground, where ever it goes I will be ready, but I would be happy the most on my feet.
Have you altered your training camp for this fight. in any way?
I have been doing a lot of conditioning, a lot of explosive training and endurance work. I want to get the explosive power. I am doing a lot of squats, a lot of sprints, clean and press, inverted push ups. I like to do a lot of speed work like punching the dumbbells.
Training and diet go hand in hand, do you have to change your diet when you are training for a fight?
I always eat really clean anyway, my body fat normally stays around 7%. High carb and protein diet. I am always ready to fight. It is difficult enough to cut weight. I always around about 81 or 82 [kgs] So it's hard enough to get to 77 [kgs] although I have fought at 75 [kgs] before and it was worse.
When I am taking the rest for the fight, a week before. I would normally do a lot of running. After each meal I would go out for a light jog, so that my body doesn't store any of it and uses only what it needs. I end up with about a kilo left to cut, I do that through the sauna. I put it all back on after the weigh ins”
It is important for fighters to have good records in this sport, what a win over Sam this weekend would do for your career?
It would just be another win on my record. I am just taking whatever fights are coming to me. I am fighting at the end of August on a Ultimate Conflict card and again on the 11th of September. I am keeping busy, I have a lot of thai fights coming up this year and next. My hope is to go away to Thailand this coming February after that I want to go away to America for a few weeks.
I always like to stay busy, If I have any injuries or anything I would take the proper rest that is needed before I go back to training. However if I am fighting fit I will take any fight.
Most MMA fighters have to work around full time jobs, is this the case for you and how does this affect your training?
I have a full time job, I am a personal trainer. Its not that difficult to fit in my training. If I was working late at night I would come in early and get my training done. Also if there is no classes I would stay behind and do it then”
The majority of fighters like to go between gyms, is this something you do and do you think it helps improve your game?
Yeah I train in Elite Martial Arts and The Dog pound. I think it helps my big time. It means I can adapt to any fight.
What the dream finish for Aaron would be this weekend?
I would like to go for the knockout. That is my favourite. No one stands for me long enough. If he likes to stand and bang that will be good
Thanks Aaron, we wish you all the best for you fight.
