Wayne Murrie Interview
22 Jul 2010
By Ben Cartlidge
Wayne Murrie is no stranger to big fights, and they don’t come much bigger than the main event of upcoming OMMAC 6 as he takes on John Maguire for the Welterweight title. MMA Hit Pit took the time to chat with Wayne about his preparation to the fight and his hopes for the future.
Wayne, it’s good to speak to you. How are preparations coming on for your upcoming title fight at OMMAC 6?
Hi, it’s good to speak to you too. The preparations for my fight on OMMAC are going 100% to plan. My fitness, weight and conditioning are all on track.
This fight will truly have implications in the UK welterweight rankings; do you see this fight as your ticket to bigger fights?
I think the fight will have a big impression in the UK welterweight scene, but I'm not sure if this fight will be my ticket to the bigger fights. I will just take one fight at a time and hopefully I'll get noticed.
John Maguire brings a lot of problems to the table, what do you see as his strengths?
John is a very good fighter and will bring everything he’s got. I would say his strengths are his wrestling; from what I've seen he likes to take his fights to the ground
OMMAC really is picking up a lot of momentum in the UK at the moment, what does it mean to you to be in the main event at this stage in your career?
OMMAC is a fantastic show and to be the main event is really a big thing to me, it means a lot. I feel that’s where I need to be if I'm going to go places with my career.
Describe a typical weeks training at this point in your schedule.
I train twice a day for about an hour and a half each session (morning and night). On Saturdays and Sundays I only train once a day as I have to find time to spend with my family. I have a very active lifestyle at the same time. I go jet skiing, quad biking and out on my motor cross bike as much as I can get. A man’s got to have fun right?
What do you see as the unique elements of your overall game?
I would say that my overall game is my unique element. I'm pretty well versed, wherever the fight goes.
What do you see as the advantages of fighting out of Manvers Fight Factory?
I get to train with a load of great guys at the gym. Manvers is not the best known gym yet, but we attract some very good guys over to train with us.
How far have you seen the sport change in this country during the course of your career?
Wow. It’s unreal how fast the sport is changing. When I first started out training, it was like no-one hardly knew anything about mma and the UFC were nowhere near as big as it is now. These days there are so many mma fans all over the world and the UFC has been to England so many times. The sport is just going from strength to strength.
Following on from this fight, is there anyone else that you’ve got your sights set on as a potential opponent in the future?
After this fight I do have a few guys in mind but wouldn't like to say until they’re confirmed but I will fight any well ranked fighter anywhere.
What can we expect to see from Wayne Murrie on August 7th?
You can expect to see me win with fists of fury.
What do you want to achieve in your mixed martial arts career?
I want to get to the top of the UFC; with the right training and determination, anything is possible. Look how fast Dan Hardy got up there. He was fighting on the same shows as me not so long ago.
Thanks very much for taking the time to speak to us here, is there anyone that you’d like to thank or give a shout out to at this point?
Thank you for giving me this interview. I'd like to thank all the people around me who are helping me get where I want to go.
